چکیده

THE blue colour of the blood of certain arthropods and molluscs is due to the presence of a protein, containing copper, which exists in oxidised and reduced forms; the former, oxyhaemocyanin, has a blue colour, whilst the latter, haemocyanin, is colourless. The transformation of the oxidised into the reduced form is readily accomplished by exposing blood containing oxyhaemocyanin to a vacuum or by saturating it with an inert gas; the reverse change takes place spontaneously on again bringing the blood into contact with air. Oxyhaemocyanin has been isolated in crystalline condition from the blood of certain species. [For bibliography see Dhere, 1915.] The properties of haemocyanin immediately suggest that this pigment exercises respiratory functions analogous to those of haemoglobin. This view has, in fact, been almost generally accepted and has received support from determinations, by various authors, of the oxygen capacities of the bloods of a number of marine invertebrates. In the case of those species which contain haemocyanin, the values obtained, although differing widely from species to species and even from individual to individual of the same species, were considerably higher than the oxygen capacity of the sea-water in which the animals lived. With those species containing no haemocyanin, on the other hand, the values approximated to that of sea-water. This is illustrated by the following figures, which are quoted from Winterstein [1909].

Some Observations on the Dissociation of H^mocyanin by the Colorimetric Method

DETERMINATIONS by Winterstein (1908) on the oxygen capacity of the blood of invertebrates endowed with and devoid of haemocyanin in their blood (together with the more recent investigations of Dhe>6 (1916-20) who has correlated the oxygen capacity and copper content of the hsemocyanincontaining blood of a number of genera), leave no doubt that haemocyanin is a reversibly oxidisable pigment whic...

Haemocyanin Synthesis in the Crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus: in vitro Production by the Midgut Gland after Addition of Oxygen Binding Modulators and Exogenous Copper

The copper containing oxygen carrier haemo cyanin is the predominant protein in the hemolymph of most molluscs, crustaceans and spiders. Despite its abundance and the detailed knowledge on physiological aspects, relatively little informa tion exists on haemocyanin synthesis and its regu lation [1-4], In analogy to haemoglobin, where the addition of haeme influences the haemoglobin production...

Binding of urate and caffeine to haemocyanin analysed by isothermal titration calorimetry.

Haemocyanin serves as an oxygen carrier in the haemolymph of decapod crustaceans. The oxygen-binding behaviour of the pigment is modulated by the two major anaerobic metabolites, l-lactate and urate. The binding of these two metabolites to haemocyanin has been investigated mainly indirectly by following the effector-induced changes in the oxygen-binding properties of the respiratory pigment. On...

Binding of Urate and Caffeine to Hemocyanin Analyzed by Isothermal Titration Calorimetry

Two major anaerobic metabolites, L-lactate and urate, modulate the oxygen affinity of haemocyanin in some accumulates as the main glycolytic end-product in anaerobic Carcinus maenas, Cancer pagurus, Callinectes sapidus and other crustaceans, lowers the P 50 of the respiratory pigment independently of the proton concentration and reduces the cooperativity of oxygen binding (Truchot, 1980; Johnso...

Short Communication Urate Does Not Accumulate in the Haemolymph of Exercised Blue Crabs, Calunectes Sapidus

L-Lactate, the only known anaerobic end-product in decapod crustaceans (Gade, 1983), increases haemocyanin oxygen-affinity (Tnichot, 1980; Mangum, 1983; Bridges and Morris, 1986). In exercised blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, the decrease in haemocyanin oxygen-affinity induced by metabolic acidosis via the Bohr shift was substantially balanced by the opposing effect of L-lactate (Booth etal, 19...
